Podiatry is the management of foot disorders associated with general health conditions. A Podiatrist deals with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of foot and lower limb disorders.

We tend to take our feet for granted, but the foot is a highly complex structure which develop problems that can affect a persons overall health and well being.

Routine Podiatry Treatment. This is the treatment of nail cutting, hard calluses (excessive build-up of hard skin) hard and soft corns, painful cracked heels, incurving or ingrown nails, bacterial, fungal or viral infections.

Nail Surgery. The permanent removal of the sides of the in-growing nail, or the entire nail, under local anaesthetic. The nail matrix (nail root) is then treated to prevent re-growth of the problem area.

Podiatric Acupuncture. Acupuncture has been used for more than 2000 years in the Far East. In the post 30 years it has become more popular in this country. Acupuncture has been used to treat many medical problems but it is particularly useful for pain.

Like many other medical professions, Podiatry has recognised the benefits that acupuncture can offer to the lower limb. There has been increasing research showing how beneficial acupuncture is in managing pain, especially diabetic neuropathy osteoarthritis and musculo-skeletal problems of the lower limb, such as heel pain and plantar fasciffis.

How many treatments are necessary?
For most painful lower limb conditions research has shown that approximately 6 treatments taking place on consecutive weeks gives optimum benefits. subsequent top up treatments maybe needed every 6 months or so. Emma Clark
